Australia sets five-year plan to expand genomic healthcare

The Australian Government, together with state and territory governments, has released the National Health Genomics Policy Framework and Implementation Plan 2026–30.
The framework sets out a national approach to bringing genomic medicine further into routine healthcare.
Genomics is creating new possibilities in how diseases can be prevented, identified and treated. It can also support more personalised approaches to care.
A coordinated national approach
The new framework was developed jointly by the Australian Government and state and territory governments.
Consumers, communities, healthcare professionals, researchers and industry also contributed to its development.
Over the five-year period, governments will work together to build stronger skills, systems and confidence in the use of genomics.
The aim is to support its continued integration into Australia's healthcare system.
