Victoria Recognises the Contributions of Its Allied Health Professionals
15 Oct 2026
Allied health workers play an important role in Victoria’s healthcare system, helping people maintain their independence, manage ongoing health problems and improve their daily lives. More than 42,500 professionals across 27 allied health professions contribute to health and community services throughout the state.
Their responsibilities include assessing patients, delivering therapies and supporting recovery and wellbeing. They may work directly with patients or alongside doctors, nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals to coordinate appropriate care.
This year’s Allied Health Professions Day theme, Stronger, Together, draws attention to the value of sharing expertise and working across professional boundaries. Allied health teams also collaborate with technology specialists, digital health staff and service managers to develop practical solutions to healthcare challenges.
Such partnerships can help bring services closer to communities, encourage new approaches to care and support a capable, sustainable health workforce.
Victoria’s Chief Allied Health Officer and the Allied Health Workforce Team help guide this work through strategic planning, consultation, policy development and workforce initiatives. Their engagement with health services, professional organisations and sector representatives also supports the development of professional skills and workforce capacity.
Several Victorian health programs nominated for the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards are being recognised as part of the celebration:
- Northern Health: Musculoskeletal Wellness Program
- Northern Health: Adult Community Mental Health Services program
- Western Health: BeWell Program
- Monash Health: Multidisciplinary Women’s Reproductive Health Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) Statewide Service
- Eastern Health: From Burnout to Belonging: Redesigning Early-Career Physiotherapy
Looking ahead, Victoria plans to explore broader advanced-practice opportunities for allied health professionals, provide funding and grants to support the workforce, and strengthen collaboration across the sector.
These efforts aim to support the people delivering allied health services and improve the care available to Victorian communities.
