Victoria expands access to free overdose reversal medication

15 Oct 2026

The Victorian Government is trialling 20 naloxone dispensing machines across the state, with 10 planned for metropolitan Melbourne and another 10 for regional and rural communities.

Machines are available at 17 locations across Victoria, including the latest sites:

  • Corio Community Health Centre
  • University Hospital Geelong
  • Peninsula University Hospital, Frankston
  • Wonthaggi Hospital
  • Cohealth Footscray, Paisley Street
  • Dandenong Hospital
  • Royal Melbourne Hospital

Three more locations in the City of Yarra and City of Melbourne are expected to be announced soon.

Each machine provides free take-home naloxone packs containing two nasal spray doses. The medicine can be administered by anyone by following the instructions provided in the pack.

Victoria has also expanded its Take-Home Naloxone Program to allow hospital emergency departments and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) to participate. This will help make naloxone available at more locations across the state.

Naloxone is non-addictive and does not cause intoxication. It can help reverse overdoses involving prescription opioids, heroin and synthetic opioids.
