Social prescribing can help older adults stay connecte
16 Sep 2026
Social prescribing gives older adults opportunities to take part in activities that support wellbeing, social connection and community participation.
Common referral options include:
- Physical activity programs
- Arts and creative groups
- Gardening and nature-based activities
- Volunteering
- Adult learning
- Social connection and befriending programs
These options can be matched to a person’s interests, culture and level of physical ability.
Research suggests that these types of activities are linked with better wellbeing and less loneliness among older adults (Sadio et al. 2024).
GPs and other health professionals can find local programs and consider suitable referral options for their patients.
The Social Prescribing in General Practice series includes nine articles provided by the Lurnea Community Hub as part of its pilot Social Prescribing Program.
