Understanding sensory processing difficulties in children

These challenges can become more noticeable when children start school. Busy classrooms, new routines, different sounds and other demands can make sensory difficulties harder to manage.
Children with autism or ADHD may experience sensory difficulties more often, and these challenges can have a greater impact on their daily lives.
Sensory difficulties can appear in different ways. A child may avoid certain foods, clothing, sounds or activities. Others may seek more movement, struggle to concentrate or become upset easily.
Every child experiences sensory difficulties differently. Parents and carers are often the first to notice changes in their child’s behaviour, so listening to their concerns is important.
