Mental Health Month: Simple ways to stay connected
01 Oct 2026
The theme, A Little Connection Goes a Long Way, encourages people to think about the relationships, places, activities and communities that are meaningful to them.
Staying connected does not need to involve a major effort. It could be a conversation with a friend, time with family, saying hello to a neighbour, playing with a pet or taking part in a local activity.
People can also find connection through culture, Country, nature, hobbies or quiet time spent with themselves.
Simple ways to connect
There is no single way to build connection. Some ideas to try during October include:
- Contact someone you have not spoken to recently.
- Catch up with a friend over tea or coffee.
- Take a walk with someone.
- Spend time outside.
- Try a local group, sporting club or community activity.
- Set aside time for something you enjoy.
- Spend time with your culture or community.
- Ask someone how they are going and take time to listen.
Even brief interactions can help people feel more connected.
Find what works for you
Connection will look different from person to person. Someone may enjoy being around a large group, while another person may prefer spending time with one trusted person or having some quiet time alone.
What matters is finding people, places or activities that provide a sense of support and connection.
Support is available when you need it
There may be times when speaking with someone you trust is helpful. Professional mental health support can also be an option when additional help is needed.
Free mental health services are available for people living in South Western Sydney.
