New resources aim to support young carers in Tasmania

20 Oct 2026

Under Tasmania’s Carer Recognition Act 2023, a young carer is someone under 25 who provides unpaid care to a family member or friend who:

  • Has a disability.
  • Has a mental illness.
  • Has a chronic or life-limiting condition.
  • Experiences alcohol or drug dependence.
  • Is frail or older.
  • Is a child cared for by an informal kinship carer.

Caring for someone experiencing mental health challenges can be difficult. Finding clear and reliable information about mental health support can also be challenging.

Young carers may not always be recognised in their caring role or receive the support they need. Access to useful information and services can help them manage their responsibilities while looking after their own wellbeing.

The new resources aim to help young carers understand mental health issues and connect with appropriate support.
