Tasmania Launches Campaign to Keep 000 for Emergencies

26 Oct 2026

Ambulance Tasmania has launched the Save 000 for Emergencies campaign to reduce calls for non-emergency health issues and ensure paramedics can respond to people who need urgent emergency care.

Chief Executive Nicole Ashworth said people experiencing serious or life-threatening medical emergencies or injuries should call 000. For other health concerns, people are encouraged to consider a GP, pharmacist or Medicare Urgent Care Clinic.

People who are unsure where to seek help can call 1800MEDICARE on 1800 633 422 at any time to speak with a registered nurse. Nurses can assess symptoms and guide callers towards suitable care, including self-care at home or an appropriate health service.

During after-hours periods, if a nurse recommends seeing a GP, a telehealth consultation may be arranged. After-hours support applies from 6 pm to 8 am on weekdays and throughout the weekend.

Tasmania also has eight Medicare Urgent Care Clinics for urgent illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening. These clinics operate seven days a week, offer extended hours and do not require appointments. Their services are bulk billed, meaning eligible patients do not pay out of pocket for covered care.

The campaign encourages Tasmanians to understand their healthcare options and use emergency services when they are needed most.
