Federal Budget funding supports vulnerable communities and primary care services
13 May 2026
South Western Sydney Primary Health Network (SWSPHN) says the funding will help improve access to care for communities most in need, including First Nations people, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and those facing disadvantage.
The Budget includes major investment in Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, which are becoming a permanent part of the health system. The clinics are designed to treat urgent but non-life-threatening conditions and reduce pressure on hospital emergency departments.
A total of $1.8 billion has been allocated to support and expand these clinics across the country.
There is also $11.4 billion aimed at increasing bulk billing rates, with the goal of most GP visits being bulk billed by 2030.
For aged care, the Budget includes $3.7 billion to improve services, increase bed numbers, and support better care for older Australians. This also includes funding to expand dementia care and support low-income residents in aged care homes.
First Nations health services will receive $144.1 million to improve infrastructure and support culturally safe care. This includes funding for maternal health services and crisis support programs.
Additional investment includes new GP training places to strengthen the workforce, improvements to My Health Record for better information sharing, and expansion of mental health support through telehealth-based care.
SWSPHN says Urgent Care Clinics in its region are already receiving positive feedback from patients, who report faster and easier access to care.
Health leaders say these investments aim to improve equity in healthcare access and strengthen primary care services across Australia.
