09 Jul 2026
Before joining PCA, Dr Hatherly served as Chief Executive Officer of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. Throughout his career, he has worked across government, research, academia, industry and consumer organisations, building partnerships and supporting evidence-based policy.
He also held senior leadership roles at Alzheimer's Australia, now known as Dementia Australia, where he led work in research, policy development and consumer engagement.
Dr Hatherly said he was pleased to begin his new role and looked forward to working with PCA members, partners and the wider palliative care community.
He said every Australian should have access to compassionate, high-quality palliative care when they need it. He also said he is eager to work with the PCA Board, staff, members, consumers, carers and clinicians to strengthen palliative care services and improve support for individuals, families and communities across Australia.
PCA said demand for palliative care continues to grow alongside major changes across the health and aged care sectors. The organisation believes Dr Hatherly's experience will help strengthen its national leadership and advocacy to improve access to quality palliative care for Australians.
