Health graduates can apply for registration before finishing their studies
09 Oct 2026
Students nearing the end of an approved health qualification can apply for professional registration before receiving their final results. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) can begin assessing applications while waiting for education providers to confirm graduates' results.
Registration with the relevant National Board is required before graduates can begin working as registered health practitioners.
How to apply through the Ahpra portal
Graduates must first create an Ahpra portal account and set up multifactor authentication to keep their account secure.
Applicants can then select ‘Apply for registration’ and complete the required steps, including submitting certified documents, completing an online identity check and paying the relevant fees.
Once the application has been lodged, applicants can track its progress through the portal. Ahpra will wait for the education provider to supply the graduate's results before finalising the assessment.
Support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates
Ahpra's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement and Support team offers individual assistance throughout the registration process. The team can provide regular phone support, help applicants understand the requirements and explain disclosures that may need consideration by the relevant National Board.
Graduates who need assistance can contact the team at mobengagementsupport@ahpra.gov.au.
Tips to avoid delays
Ahpra recommends checking its graduate application guidance and frequently asked questions before submitting an application. Applicants should ensure all required documents are included and provide evidence that they meet their National Board's registration standards.
Some documents may need to be certified by an authorised person. Applicants can use Ahpra's document certification guide to check the requirements and identify who can certify their documents.
How long does registration take?
Ahpra aims to finalise applications within two weeks of receiving graduate results, provided the application is complete.
Applying before completing their studies allows Ahpra to start reviewing the application early, helping graduates begin their careers sooner.
