AMA seeks pathologist feedback on MBS and pathology fees
08 Oct 2026
The review is looking at how easily pathology professionals can find, understand and apply the rules that affect Medicare claiming.
Pathology services can be subject to extra requirements and restrictions. These may be set out across MBS item descriptors, explanatory notes, determinations and legislation. The AMA wants to understand how these rules are used in day-to-day practice and where clearer information may be needed.
The consultation is seeking feedback on:
- difficulties finding or understanding legislative requirements
- differences between legislation, MBS item descriptions and supporting guidance
- challenges with frequency limits, co-claiming and other claiming rules
- ways to make pathology claiming requirements easier to understand
- areas that may need future advocacy or reform.
The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and is open until 20 October.
