AMA highlights key health system issues

The AMA said the report brings together data on the challenges facing the aged care system and will be published each year to track changes and progress.
The organisation said further work is underway to develop costed measures that can be presented to government as part of its advocacy on aged care.
The release of the report also coincided with the latest Intergenerational Report. The AMA highlighted the expected increase in life expectancy and the importance of helping people spend more of those years in good health.
It said prevention requires action across areas including healthcare, housing, education and urban planning.
The AMA also discussed the role of skilled migration in Australia's health and aged care sectors. It noted that doctors, nurses and aged care workers from overseas play an important role in supporting the workforce.
The organisation said Australia needs to consider the impact of migration on countries with fewer resources while also supporting international healthcare professionals and addressing racism in healthcare settings.
Private health was another focus during the week, with AMA Vice President Julian Rait involved in discussions through the Private Health CEO Forum and Medical Cost Finder consultation.
The AMA said doctors should have a role in discussions about private health reforms to help ensure changes work for both medical professionals and patients.
The organisation will continue its advocacy on these issues, alongside other consultations and surveys currently underway.
