TGA Seeks Feedback on Removing Andrographis from Low-Risk Medicines List
08 Apr 2026
The review follows safety concerns linked to allergic reactions.
Andrographis is commonly found in herbal cold and flu products sold without a prescription in pharmacies, supermarkets and health food stores. However, reports of anaphylaxis, a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, have raised concerns.
These reactions can happen quickly and without warning, even in people with no history of allergies. Symptoms may appear within 30 minutes of taking the product and often require urgent medical care.
The TGA is asking for feedback from health professionals, consumers, and industry groups before making a final decision.
An updated safety review has also been released, including analysis of adverse events reported up to December 2025. Consumers are encouraged to review this information and speak with a healthcare professional before using products containing Andrographis.
