TGA Issues New Warning on Prescription Medicine Advertising

18 Jun 2026

The regulator says these medicines must not be advertised directly to the public in most cases, as treatment decisions should remain between patients and qualified health professionals.

The guidance highlights that online platforms, social media, booking systems and promotional materials must not be used to market prescription-only products, including injectables, weight-loss treatments and similar therapies.

It also reinforces that businesses involved in health services must ensure their advertising complies with national rules, especially where telehealth or online prescribing is involved.

The TGA has reminded industry that non-compliance can result in serious penalties, including large fines and legal action.

Businesses and practitioners are encouraged to review their advertising practices and report any suspected breaches.
