Newstead-based GP Dr Jehan Phillips was named Tasmania’s GP of the Year at the RACGP’s Fellowship and Awards Ceremony in Hobart.
RACGP Tasmania Chair Dr Toby Gardner praised Dr Phillips for his long-standing service to patients and his work supporting the next generation of GPs.
Dr Phillips has spent more than 26 years serving his community. Dr Gardner said his professionalism, generosity and commitment to patient care had earned him strong respect and trust within the community.
Other award recipients included Hobart GP Dr Jay Shoemaker, who was named GP Supervisor of the Year, and Dr Rebecca Kelly from Glebe Hill Family Practice in Howrah, who received the GP in Training of the Year award.
Dr Gardner recognised Dr Shoemaker for his clinical skills, compassion and leadership. As a GP and practice owner, he has also helped create a supportive learning environment where GP registrars can build their skills and confidence.
Dr Kelly was recognised for her commitment to learning, teamwork and providing quality patient care. Dr Gardner said she had already made a positive contribution to patients and colleagues.
Two other GPs, Dr Nerrelie Cann and Professor Tania Winzenberg, received RACGP Life Membership awards.
Launceston Medical Centre was named Tasmania’s General Practice of the Year. Dr Gardner praised the practice for meeting the varied healthcare needs of its patients and supporting medical education and GP training.
The ceremony also recognised two GPs as Rural Generalists, alongside the 31 new RACGP Fellows.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright congratulated the new Fellows, noting that Fellowship reflects years of study, training and practical experience in patient care. He also highlighted the important role GPs play in supporting the health of individuals and communities.
The Tasmanian award winners will now progress to the national awards, with the results due to be announced at the RACGP’s GP26 conference in Adelaide next month.
