Refugee Week highlights connection, care and understanding in Australia

12 May 2026

This year’s events will run from 14 to 20 June and focus on building stronger connection, understanding, and inclusion across communities.

In South Western Sydney, which supports the highest number of refugees in NSW, health services are highlighting the importance of culturally safe and trauma-informed care.

Refugee patients often have complex health needs linked to past trauma, interrupted healthcare, and challenges experienced during resettlement.

Health providers also note that many refugees face barriers to care, including language difficulties, financial stress, and navigating a complex health system.

Other important factors affecting health include housing, employment, education, visa status, and concerns about family members overseas.

Services in the region are focusing on a more holistic approach, using community support and “wraparound” care to improve overall wellbeing.

Local organisations supporting refugee health and settlement include trauma and torture recovery services, settlement agencies, and community support organisations across South Western Sydney.
