New RACGP grants to support GP-led research across Australia

13 May 2026

The grants are available to GPs, registrars, and research teams working on projects linked to everyday general practice. Areas include chronic disease management, mental health, medicine safety, preventive health, access to care, and workforce challenges.

Funding ranges from $1000 to $100,000, with applications open until 22 June.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said the grants are designed to help turn practical ideas into real improvements for patients and communities.

He said the Foundation was created almost 70 years ago to support research that strengthens healthcare, and that commitment remains important today.

The latest grant round follows strong interest in the Foundation’s recent Major Grants program.

This year’s funding includes new opportunities such as a national diabetes scoping project and the Therapeutic Guidelines Limited Quality Use of Medicines Research Grant.

That grant will provide $100,000 for early and mid-career GP researchers studying how medicines and clinical guidelines are used in everyday general practice.

Research may focus on prescribing decisions, patient safety, and ways to improve the use of evidence-based care in clinics.

RACGP Research and Foundation Manager Dr Taryn Elliott said the grant supports both research growth and better patient outcomes in Australian general practice.

Dr Wright also called on the Federal Government to increase investment in GP-led research, saying general practice receives only a small share of national health research funding despite being where most Australians access healthcare.

Applications for the 2026 Large and General Grants round are now open through the Foundation website.
