RACGP workshop to help GPs manage WorkCover cases
08 Oct 2026
Many Australian GPs manage workplace injuries but say they need more guidance on WorkCover processes. A recent newsGP poll of more than 800 respondents found that confidence levels vary among GPs.
About 24% of respondents said they were not very confident and wanted more training. Another 46% felt somewhat confident but still had gaps in their knowledge. Meanwhile, 29% felt confident managing WorkCover procedures, fees and documentation.
To address these concerns, the RACGP Victoria International Medical Graduate (IMG) Committee is organising a workshop to help GPs better understand WorkCover claims, fees and medical report writing.
The session will be led by Dr Vahid Masoumi, a Melbourne-based GP, medical educator and member of the RACGP Victoria IMG Committee.
Dr Masoumi said WorkCover cases involve several parties, including injured workers, employers, government authorities, insurers and other health professionals. This can make the process complex and increase the risk of medico-legal issues for GPs.
Most workplace injuries covered by compensation are managed in general practice. However, these cases can place significant demands on GPs because they require specific knowledge and skills.
The half-day workshop will cover how to identify WorkCover authorities and insurers, issue Certificates of Capacity, understand consultation and report writing fees, and manage patient confidentiality.
Participants will also learn about checking eligibility, making referrals, coordinating care and addressing common barriers faced by patients. The session will explore ways to work with other healthcare providers and support injured workers as they return to work.
The workshop is open to New Fellows, international medical graduates, registrars and other RACGP members who want to improve their knowledge of WorkCover.
