RACGP Faculty Elections Open Opportunities for GP Advocacy

Associate Professor Clements has spent 10 years as a member or Chair of RACGP Faculty Councils. He says his experience has shown him the value of bringing together GPs, government, non-government organisations and other groups to support positive change.
Based in Townsville, he first joined the Queensland Faculty Council after working in medical management. He wanted to better understand the factors affecting doctors and general practice and to build his experience in advocacy.
He later became Deputy Chair of the Queensland Faculty Council before moving to the Rural Faculty Council.
Associate Professor Clements said his work with the Rural Faculty gave him the opportunity to represent the experiences of doctors and communities across rural and remote Australia.
He has visited rural communities across several states and territories, bringing local concerns and ideas to discussions with politicians and other decision-makers.
He also values sharing solutions used in different regions to help address challenges in general practice.
As his term as Rural Faculty Chair comes to an end, Associate Professor Clements will become the inaugural Chair of the RACGP Expert Committee – GP Workforce.
He is encouraging GPs across Australia to consider nominating for the RACGP Faculty Council elections.
Positions are available across the RACGP’s 11 Faculty Councils, including state and territory faculties and councils representing Specific Interests, GPs in Training, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and Rural GPs.
From this year, most Faculty Council positions will have three-year terms instead of two-year terms. The Western Australian Faculty will have a different arrangement, with five candidates receiving three-year terms and five receiving two-year terms.
Associate Professor Clements said the level of commitment can vary depending on a GP’s available time, allowing doctors to contribute alongside their existing work.
Nominations close on Friday 28 August at 4 pm AEST.
Candidates will be announced on 7 September, with voting opening at midday the same day. Voting closes at midday on 17 September, with elected members announced on 18 September.
