Psychology training reform enters next stage after consultation
29 Sep 2026
The consultation was part of the Higher Degree Redesign Project, commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing. The project is looking at possible changes to the higher degree pathway for psychology registration.
Psychologists, students, education providers, professional groups, consumers and other stakeholders contributed to the consultation.
The Board will use this feedback when preparing advice and recommendations for the Australian Government.
The review is focused on several workforce challenges, including rising demand for psychological services, the number of psychology graduates entering the workforce and the long-term sustainability of the profession.
It is also examining ways to make psychology training more accessible and reduce barriers for people progressing through education and registration pathways.
Feedback showed strong support for considering changes to psychology education and training as demand for services increases.
Stakeholders also raised concerns about how any new model could affect supervision, training quality and education providers. The Board said these issues will need to be considered if governments decide to progress the proposed reforms.
Ahpra CEO Justin Untersteiner said the project is focused on supporting access to safe and effective psychological care while building a sustainable workforce.
Psychology Board of Australia Chair Rachel Phillips thanked those who contributed to the consultation and said their views would help shape the Board's advice to government.
The Board will now continue developing its recommendations for government consideration.
