New proposal to update CPD and practice rules for health workers in Australia

New proposal to update CPD and practice rules for health workers in Australia

15 May 2026

The review looks at the rules for recency of practice and continuing professional development (CPD), which all registered health workers must meet to renew their registration.

These rules are designed to make sure practitioners are working regularly and continuing to learn so they can provide safe and effective care.

Under the proposed changes, practitioners would need to complete:

  • 150 hours of practice in the past year, or 450 hours over the past three years
  • 20 hours of CPD each year, including at least 5 hours of interactive learning
  • An extra 10 hours of CPD for those with additional skills, such as medicines prescribing endorsements
  • CPD that is based on evidence and focused on improving patient outcomes

Ahpra says the aim is to make the standards more consistent across different health professions while supporting safe care and a strong workforce.

Public consultation is now open and will close on 17 July 2026. Feedback is being sought from health practitioners, organisations, and members of the public.

People can read the consultation paper and submit feedback through the Ahpra consultations website.
