Measles Alert Issued for Sydney and Northern Sydney
17 Apr 2026
The infection was most likely picked up in South-East Asia, where measles outbreaks are currently happening.
The person moved through several places in Sydney and Northern Sydney while they were infectious without knowing it, including some healthcare facilities. NSW Health has listed these exposure sites on its website, and the list is being updated as needed. These locations are not considered a current risk.
Anyone who was at these places during the listed times should watch for symptoms for up to 18 days. Early signs include fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a red rash that usually starts on the face and spreads across the body.
So far in 2026, there have been 43 confirmed measles cases in NSW.
Health authorities say anyone who develops symptoms should contact a doctor and call ahead before visiting a clinic or hospital.
Vaccination is strongly recommended, especially for people born after 1965. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are needed for full protection and are free in NSW for eligible groups
