Measles Alert Issued for Potts Point, Darlinghurst and Sydney CBD
22 Jun 2026
The case is a returned traveller from Southeast Asia, where measles outbreaks are currently ongoing.
Health authorities said the person visited several public venues, including a healthcare facility and a backpacker hostel. A full list of exposure sites has been published on the NSW Health website and is being updated as new information becomes available. Officials have confirmed these locations do not pose an ongoing risk.
NSW Health is advising people who were at the listed sites at the relevant times to monitor for symptoms of measles. These include fever, sore eyes, runny nose, and cough, followed a few days later by a red rash that typically starts on the face and spreads across the body.
People who develop symptoms after visiting an exposure site are advised to seek medical care and call ahead before attending clinics or hospitals to avoid contact with others.
South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Physician Dr Anthea Katelaris said symptoms can take up to 18 days to appear after exposure, and people should remain alert during this period.
She also urged anyone who develops symptoms after visiting an exposure location to seek testing and medical advice promptly.
NSW Health has recorded 51 measles cases in the state so far in 2026.
Measles is a highly contagious but vaccine-preventable disease that spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Health authorities are reminding the community to ensure vaccinations are up to date. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is recommended for anyone born after 1965 who has not received two doses, and is also advised before overseas travel.
The MMR vaccine is free for children at 12 and 18 months of age, and catch-up doses are available for eligible adults. It can also be given early to infants from six months of age in certain travel situations, following medical advice.
Vaccines are available through GPs, and pharmacies can provide them for people over five years of age.
