Dementia remains Australia’s leading cause of death

Dementia is Australia’s leading cause of death, accounting for about one in 10 deaths nationally. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. Dementia is also the country’s second leading cause of disease burden.

Despite its impact, changes in memory and thinking may not always be identified until symptoms become more advanced.

Many cases remain undiagnosed

Around half of Australians living with dementia are estimated to have no formal diagnosis.

Many of these people regularly visit their GP for other health conditions. Memory concerns may come up during routine appointments or be raised by family members.

Once cognitive concerns are identified, some patients may also face delays in specialist assessment and access to early support.

Dementia cases expected to increase

Australia’s ageing population is expected to contribute to a significant increase in the number of people living with dementia and the overall health burden linked to the condition.

Early identification in general practice may help reduce delays between symptoms, diagnosis and access to appropriate care.

Why early assessment matters

Investigating memory concerns early can help GPs identify or rule out other possible causes of cognitive changes. These can include depression, medication side effects and some metabolic conditions.

When dementia is suspected, an early diagnosis and referral can give patients and their families more time to plan for the future, access support and consider available treatment options.

Research has also estimated that up to 45% of dementia cases are linked to potentially modifiable risk factors.

The role of general practice

GPs are well placed to identify possible cognitive impairment because many people with dementia already attend primary care for other health concerns.

Early assessment can support timely diagnosis and referral while also allowing GPs to address modifiable risk factors that may affect cognitive health.
