Almost 300 GPs join the profession in NSW

A total of 276 New Fellows, one Fellow in Advanced Rural Generalism and seven Rural Generalist Fellows were recognised at the NSW ceremony.
RACGP NSW&ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman congratulated the new Fellows and said their achievement reflected years of dedication to general practice and patient care.
She said the new GPs would play an important role in improving access to healthcare, with many expected to work in rural and regional communities.
Some will also take on roles such as GP supervisors and healthcare leaders, supporting the future of general practice.
RACGP President Dr Michael Wright attended the ceremony and described it as a significant moment for the profession.
He highlighted the wide range of communities where the new Fellows are working, including metropolitan, rural, regional and remote areas, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Dr Wright said Australia had previously struggled to prioritise GP training, contributing to problems with patient access. He said the growing number of doctors entering general practice was a positive sign, but continued government support would be important.
In 2026, a record 1,772 doctors joined the Australian General Practice Training program, almost 19% more than in 2025.
Of this year's trainees, 841 are undertaking the rural training pathway, an increase of 44.2% from 2025. They will complete all three years of training in regional, rural or remote communities.
