Work Begins on Northern Tasmania's New Purpose-Built Hospice

The hospice will be created by redeveloping the Allambi Building at the Launceston General Hospital. Local company Vos Construction & Joinery has been awarded the construction contract.
Supported by a $20 million investment from the Australian Government, the facility will include 12 inpatient beds for people living with life-limiting illnesses. It will also provide respite services and support for families and carers throughout their care journey.
The new hospice has been designed to feel more like a home than a hospital. It will operate around the clock and include access to the existing gardens and outdoor spaces to create a calm and comfortable setting for patients and visitors.
Community consultation played a key role in the project's design. Input was gathered from organisations including Friends of the Northern Hospice, Palliative Care Tasmania and the Northern Consumer and Community Engagement Council to help shape the final plans.
To prepare the site for construction, services previously operating from the Allambi Building have been relocated to Cimitiere House on Cimitiere Street.
Building work is scheduled to continue over the next two years, with completion planned for late 2027, when the hospice is expected to begin caring for its first patients.
