Victorian GPs Meet MPs to Promote Better Healthcare Reform

During the annual GPs@Parliament event, Parliament House became a temporary clinic where GPs carried out blood pressure checks, diabetes risk assessments and mental wellbeing screenings for MPs.
The event gives politicians an opportunity to speak directly with GPs about the important role of general practice and the challenges facing the profession.
RACGP Victoria Deputy Co-Chair Dr Aadhil Aziz said general practice plays a vital role in preventing illness and managing chronic disease.
He said investing in general practice delivers strong value for the health system, with every dollar invested returning an estimated $1.60 in benefits. He also said the free health checks encouraged busy MPs to prioritise their own health.
With the Victorian State Election approaching, GPs also discussed the RACGP’s key election priorities.
These include a full exemption from payroll tax obligations for Victorian GPs, ending the expansion of the Chemist Care Now program, and allowing GPs to prescribe isotretinoin (Roaccutane) for people with severe acne.
Dr Aziz said GPs want to work to their full scope of practice while continuing to collaborate with the wider health system.
He also said the appointment of Ben Carroll as Victoria’s new Premier presents an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the Government and general practice.
According to Dr Aziz, GPs want to work with the Government on practical solutions that improve access to affordable healthcare for Victorians close to home.
