TGA warns Australians about unapproved melanotan II tanning products
18 Aug 2026
The warning follows laboratory testing of five seized nasal spray bottles labelled “Pure Tans Triple Strength 30 MG”. Testing confirmed that the products contained melanotan II, but the amount varied between bottles.
The estimated amount of melanotan II ranged from 22 mg to 54 mg per bottle, despite the bottles carrying the same label. The TGA says this inconsistent dosing may increase the risk of adverse effects.
Melanotan II is not approved as a tanning product in Australia. Products containing the substance are not listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and have not been assessed by the TGA for quality, safety or effectiveness.
The regulator says consumers may not know exactly what ingredients are present, or how strong or reliable the products are.
The TGA is advising people using melanotan II tanning products to stop using them and safely dispose of any remaining product.
The warning follows enforcement action against a NSW-based individual. The TGA issued 27 infringement notices, totalling $101,412, over the alleged unlawful supply of melanotan II products to Australian consumers.
The TGA and NSW Police have also seized more than $120,000 worth of illicit peptide and anabolic steroid products from two NSW properties in a separate investigation.
The TGA says people who illegally import, advertise, manufacture or supply unapproved therapeutic goods can face enforcement action, including product seizures.
