TGA urges Australians not to stockpile medicines amid global supply disruptions

GPs have been advised that the TGA is closely monitoring medicine deliveries to Australia, working with industry to identify and resolve potential supply issues quickly. While global disruptions have forced pharmaceutical companies to reroute shipments, the regulator emphasises that stockpiling is unnecessary and can make it harder for others to access vital medicines.

A TGA spokesperson told newsGP:

“People should only buy the medicines they need. Stockpiling medicines is unnecessary and can disrupt access to vital medicines by patients and pharmacies.”

Medicines Australia CEO Liz de Somer said the industry acted quickly when the conflict began, switching some deliveries to air freight and rerouting sea freight shipments to maintain Australia’s supply. She confirmed there have been no shortages reported as a result of the conflict.

“It’s really important that people still take their medicines as prescribed by their doctor – don’t think that panic buying is the right action, because it’s not,” Ms de Somer said.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) noted any distress among its members is of concern and encouraged GPs to reassure patients while maintaining normal prescribing practices. Support resources for doctors are available via the college website.
