Tasmanian GPs Begin ADHD Training Under New Scope of Practice
29 May 2026
The first training workshop was held at the Tasmanian Rural Health Conference, with the first group of GPs expected to begin working under the expanded scope of practice within the next month.
Once training is completed, participating GPs will be able to assess, diagnose and prescribe ADHD medication for both children and adults, helping reduce reliance on specialist services.
The training includes practical guidance on ADHD assessment, diagnosis, treatment options and long-term management, along with completion of accredited learning modules.
The change comes as demand for ADHD services continues to grow across Tasmania, with some children waiting more than a year for treatment even after receiving a psychological assessment.
Health leaders say the new model will help reduce waiting times, lower healthcare costs and improve access to ongoing ADHD care, particularly in regional areas.
The expansion follows ongoing advocacy to allow appropriately trained GPs to play a larger role in ADHD management.
Tasmania has also faced shortages of psychiatrists, especially in the north and north-west of the state, leading many patients to rely on telehealth services for diagnosis and treatment.
An online version of the ADHD training program is expected to be available soon, allowing more GPs across Tasmania to complete the course remotely and join the program.
