Tasmania Expands Free Meningococcal B Vaccination for Infants
02 Jul 2026
The vaccine is available to babies from six weeks to two years of age, along with a catch-up program for children born on or after 1 July 2025. Vaccinations are being offered through participating general practices and selected local council clinics across the state.
Tasmanian GP Dr Prashanth Reddy Gangapuram welcomed the program, saying the vaccine protects children against a serious disease that can progress rapidly and become life-threatening. He also said removing the cost will make it easier for more families to access the vaccine.
The Tasmanian Government has invested $4 million in the program, aiming to improve vaccination rates by removing the financial barrier that previously existed when the vaccine was only available through private prescription.
According to recent national data, 39 cases of meningococcal disease have been reported across Australia this year, including 12 cases in children under five years of age.
The National Immunisation Program (NIP) continues to provide free meningococcal B vaccination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants and people with certain medical conditions. The meningococcal ACWY vaccine also remains free for eligible children, adolescents and people at higher risk.
Health experts encourage parents to speak with their GP about whether their child is eligible for the free vaccination.
