Study Explores Whether Eggs Can Help Ease Perimenopause Symptoms

Perimenopause is a stage marked by hormonal changes that can affect sleep, physical health and quality of life. Sleep problems are especially common, with many women experiencing difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
Researchers from Deakin University investigated whether the timing of egg consumption could influence sleep outcomes in women experiencing poor sleep during perimenopause.
The nine-week Egg Pro-Sleep PM trial involved 22 women who ate two eggs each day, either in the morning or evening, while also receiving sleep hygiene education.
The study found that eating eggs in the evening did not negatively affect sleep quality, sleep duration or sleep efficiency. Researchers also observed small improvements in symptoms such as backache and joint pain among women who consumed eggs at night.
While eggs were not shown to significantly improve sleep, the findings suggest they can be included in an evening meal without disrupting rest.
Eggs are a nutrient-rich food that provide high-quality protein as well as important nutrients such as tryptophan, vitamin D and choline, which support overall health and wellbeing.
Researchers noted that adequate protein intake is particularly important during perimenopause, when women may experience changes in muscle mass, metabolism and appetite regulation.
For GPs, the study highlights the value of practical dietary advice as part of a broader approach to managing perimenopausal symptoms. Experts say whole-of-diet strategies remain important, as no single food is likely to address complex sleep concerns on its own.
