Staying With Your GP Helps Aged Care Residents
02 Mar 2026
The research by the Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA) looked at 331,220 older Australians in nearly 3,000 aged care facilities from 2013 to 2019. Residents who kept their GP had an 8% lower chance of emergency visits, a 6% lower risk of unplanned hospital stays, and up to 21% fewer dementia-related hospitalisations.
The study also found that allied health professionals, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners helped residents stay well. Experts say better support and funding are needed so more residents can keep access to their regular GP.
