Knowing where to seek medical care can also ensure you get the right support if you become unwell.

Health experts recommend these 10 simple ways to reduce the spread of flu and support recovery:

  • Get your annual flu vaccination.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue.
  • Throw used tissues away immediately and wash your hands.
  • Stay home, rest and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
  • Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, plates or towels when unwell.
  • Only take antibiotics if prescribed by a healthcare professional.
  • Know the difference between a cold and the flu, as influenza is often more severe.
  • Check your symptoms by calling 1800MEDICARE for free medical advice, available 24 hours a day.

If you become unwell, your regular GP should usually be your first point of contact. Patients are encouraged to ask about telehealth appointments, inform the practice about their symptoms before attending, and wear a mask if visiting the clinic.

If your GP is unavailable or you are unsure what care you need, 1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422) provides free, round-the-clock support. A registered nurse can assess your symptoms and guide you to the most appropriate care, which may include self-care, a GP appointment, urgent care, a pharmacist or a hospital emergency department. When appropriate, a GP phone or video consultation may also be arranged.

For illnesses or injuries that require prompt attention but are not life-threatening, Urgent Care clinics offer free, bulk-billed treatment. In South Western Sydney, services are available in Austral, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Gregory Hills and Liverpool.

Patients who need medical care outside normal clinic hours can also access after-hours GP services in Wollondilly and Wingecarribee.
