Starting conversations about dementia
20 Sep 2026
Dementia can change a person’s memory, thinking, behaviour and ability to manage everyday activities. Its effects can also be felt by family members, friends and carers.
Dementia Action Week will run from 21 to 27 September 2026. This year’s theme, “It’s time to talk about dementia”, focuses on making conversations about dementia more open and supportive.
Having these conversations can help challenge stigma and improve understanding. It may also encourage people to seek information and support earlier.
For people living with dementia and those caring for them, open communication can help reduce feelings of isolation and create stronger connections.
Information about dementia and available support is provided by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and Dementia Australia.
Health professionals can access free dementia training, education and continuing professional development through Dementia Training Australia.
