SAFE Tool Could Help GPs Diagnose Endometriosis Sooner
10 Mar 2026
Called the SAFE score, it could shorten the 6–8 years many women wait for a diagnosis.
The questionnaire covers symptoms like frequent pelvic pain, heavy or painful periods, painkiller use, and family history. Each answer gives points, helping GPs decide if a referral or faster treatment is needed.
Professor Gita Mishra said the aim is to start treatment as early as possible, even in teens. Professor Danielle Mazza noted it’s promising but still needs testing in clinics.
The tool is based on data from more than 9,000 women and focuses on age-appropriate questions for adolescents. Early detection could also improve fertility outcomes later.
