SA parties clash over pharmacy prescribing ahead of election
17 Feb 2026
Shadow Health Minister Heidi Girolamo said the Liberals are focused on ensuring access to GPs, rather than backing the Labor Government’s pharmacy expansion program.
The debate, hosted by AMA SA, also featured Health Minister Chris Picton. Minister Picton defended the expansion, saying pharmacists would complete postgraduate training and supervised practice, allowing health professionals to work to their full scope.
The RACGP has raised concerns about safety and governance, highlighting the lack of clear frameworks for supervision and accountability if something goes wrong. Meanwhile, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia criticised the Opposition’s stance as limiting access to care.
