Record GP Training Places Confirmed for 2027
15 Apr 2026
More than 2000 positions will be available nationwide for doctors working towards Fellowship as specialist GPs.
Of these, up to 1694 places will be delivered through the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. This includes both general practice and rural generalist training.
A further 374 rural generalist training places will be offered through the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine.
The Government said this represents a record level of GP training, with an extra 100 places added for 2027, on top of 200 additional places already planned for 2026.
State and territory allocations for 2026 include:
- 629 places in New South Wales and the ACT
- 447 in Queensland
- 426 in Victoria
- 294 in Western Australia
- 191 in South Australia
- 74 in Tasmania
- 63 in the Northern Territory
The announcement follows a major agreement signed earlier this year between the Government, RACGP and ACRRM to fund GP training through to 2030.
Under the deal, the RACGP will receive $751.3 million and ACRRM $331.7 million to support training delivery.
New incentives have also been introduced to attract doctors into general practice, including $30,000 payments and additional support for trainees taking study or parental leave.
