Recognises Refugee and Migrant Health Expertise
03 Mar 2026
The new RES area highlights the important role GPs play in supporting patients from migrant and refugee backgrounds, who often face complex health, psychological, and social challenges.
Dr Rebecca Farley, past Chair of RACGP Specific Interests Refugee Health, said the move acknowledges the specialist skills GPs develop over years of practice. “Working in refugee health is about partnership, respect, and culturally responsive care,” she said.
The RES is for GPs who provide trauma-informed care, use evidence-based protocols, collaborate with interpreters and community services, navigate health system barriers, and manage complex medical and social needs.
The RES program recognises GPs with five or more years of experience in a specific area, making expertise visible and helping the wider community access high-quality, equitable care.
