RACGP Updates GPs on Pharmacy Prescribing Reform and Key Clinical Changes

16 Jul 2026

The webinar will be held on 27 July at 7:30 pm (AEST) and will cover recent developments in pharmacy scope of practice reform, its impact on patient care and general practice, the RACGP's position, and resources to help GPs respond to questions about the changes.

The latest In Practice update also includes several important reminders for healthcare professionals.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has launched new Veteran Mental Health Incentives, providing additional funding for GPs and psychiatrists to deliver ongoing mental health care to veterans.

The DVA has also simplified its compensation and rehabilitation legislation, making it easier for veterans and their families to access support. New guidance has also been released to help treating doctors provide information for compensation claims.

GPs are reminded to review treatment plans for DVA patients receiving medicinal cannabis under current grandfathering arrangements. Patients have until 31 August to update their prescriptions before the new framework takes effect on 1 September.

The Australian Living Evidence Collaboration (ALEC) has published interim guidance on drug treatments for adults and children who are critically ill with influenza. The recommendations cover antiviral medicines, corticosteroids and macrolides and are currently open for public consultation before being submitted to the NHMRC for approval.

RACGP members in New South Wales and the ACT are also invited to attend a networking event with the RACGP Board and faculty representatives on 12 August in North Sydney.

The latest update also highlights new announcements from the ANZCA Perioperative Medicine Communique, including upcoming education events and professional updates for clinicians working in perioperative medicine.
