RACGP Supports National Guidance for Safer Use of IV Fluids

09 Jul 2026

In its submission to the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, the RACGP said every decision to start, continue or stop IV fluids should be based on a patient's clinical needs, supported by clear documentation, regular review and a timely transition to oral hydration or medicines when appropriate.

The college also reflected on the 2024–25 IV fluid shortage, which affected healthcare services across Australia. It said the shortage highlighted inconsistent communication, varying impacts across healthcare settings, changes to clinical practice and uncertainty for clinicians.

The RACGP stressed that promoting appropriate IV fluid use should not be seen as accepting ongoing supply shortages. Instead, treatment decisions should always be guided by patient care rather than the availability of essential medical supplies.

The submission also called for a broader national strategy to strengthen Australia's IV fluid supply. Recommendations include better coordination, clearer communication, improved emergency preparedness, more diverse supply arrangements and greater domestic manufacturing resilience.
