RACGP Sets Out 5-Year Reform Plan for General Practice

Launched at the RACGP Practice Owners Conference, the plan outlines 200 goals for 2026–2030 focused on major changes in funding, workforce support, and how care is delivered.

The RACGP has highlighted five main priorities:

  • Increasing investment in general practice and recognising the value of GPs
  • Making sure care models are safe, evidence-based, and do not break continuity of care
  • Building and sustaining the GP workforce, including support for international medical graduates
  • Promoting culturally safe and inclusive healthcare
  • Cutting unnecessary red tape and encouraging innovation and research

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said the plan reflects concerns that the health system needs stronger support and improvement.

He said the plan was developed through consultation with members and faculties and builds on earlier advocacy work, including securing funding for three-year-old health checks.

The strategy also includes specific goals for rural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. These involve stronger anti-racism efforts, better tools to measure racism in healthcare, and increased support for rural training and supervision.

RACGP Rural Chair Associate Professor Michael Clements said rural communities often experience the impact of system gaps first and require targeted investment.

The RACGP also plans to involve more members through its GP Advocate Network to help push the reforms forward by engaging with policymakers and sharing real-world patient experiences.
