RACGP Mentoring Program Opens, GPs Share Positive Experiences

17 Apr 2026

Dr Damian Gill said the program stood out from previous mentoring experiences by offering clear guidance and structure. After becoming an RACGP Fellow, he joined the program and found it helped him build new skills, explore opportunities, and gain direction early in his career.

The eight-month program pairs mentors and mentees, providing regular check-ins and a supportive space to share ideas and solve challenges.

Dr Gill was matched with GP Dr Sarah Bird, who said mentoring is a valuable way to give back to the profession while also learning from others. She added that it can also help reduce burnout.

A recent poll found that most GPs see mentoring as very important for career support. The program is designed to help both new and experienced doctors, especially those adjusting to independent practice.

Participants say having a mentor offers a fresh perspective and helps reduce uncertainty about long-term career paths.

Applications for the 2026 program are open to both mentors and mentees until 31 May.
