RACGP Invites GPs to Help Shape the Future Through Faculty Council Elections

RACGP NSW&ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman said she joined the Faculty Council in 2018 as a registrar representative because she wanted to help improve the areas she believed could work better.
Dr Hoffman said becoming involved allowed her to raise concerns, contribute to solutions and support meaningful improvements for GPs. One of the achievements she is most proud of is helping advocate for parental leave for GP registrars, which she believes has made a real difference for doctors in training.
Nominations are now open for positions across the RACGP’s 11 Faculty Councils. These include seven state and territory faculties, along with councils representing Specific Interests, GPs in Training, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members, and Rural members.
From this year, most elected positions will have three-year terms. The Western Australian Faculty will continue with a combination of three-year and two-year terms based on election results.
RACGP Tasmania Chair Dr Toby Gardner said he became involved again during the COVID-19 pandemic after working closely with local practices and specialists to support healthcare in his community.
Since taking on leadership roles within the Faculty Council, Dr Gardner said he has helped secure important outcomes for Tasmania, including support for improved ADHD diagnosis and prescribing, as well as state funding for the meningococcal B vaccine for infants.
He encouraged GPs to consider nominating, saying the profession is facing important challenges, including funding pressures, changing healthcare roles and the growing impact of artificial intelligence.
Dr Hoffman also encouraged interested GPs to get involved, describing the Faculty Council as a welcoming group focused on strengthening general practice and supporting positive change across Australia.
Nominations close on Friday 28 August at 4:00 pm (AEST). Candidates will be announced on Monday 7 September, with voting opening at midday the same day. Voting closes at midday on Thursday 17 September (AEST), and successful candidates will be announced the following day.
