RACGP highlights GP training and workforce needs during NT visit

The tour included visits to Territory Medical in Nightcliff and Palmerston GP Super Clinic in Darwin. RACGP leaders used the visits to highlight the role of GP supervisors and training practices in expanding the Territory’s future GP workforce.
The visits also showcased the RACGP’s new GPT1 Supervisor Capacity Incentive, which helps eligible practices and supervisors take on first-term GP registrars.
The pilot program began in Semester 2, 2026 and will run until the end of 2027. It is supported by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and focuses on strengthening training capacity across MM 2–7 areas, Aboriginal Medical Services, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations.
Territory Medical Group Medical Director and GP Supervisor Dr Dimitri Andropov said supporting supervisors and training practices could help build a stronger GP workforce for the NT.
The RACGP visit also coincided with the NT Fellowship and Awards Ceremony at Parliament House, where 23 doctors were welcomed to the profession.
RACGP NT Chair Dr Sam Heard said doctors choosing to train and work in the Territory play an important role in strengthening local healthcare and improving access to services.
He said there was growing interest among young doctors in building their careers in the NT, while retention among GPs who train in rural and remote communities remained encouraging.
Dr Wright said the NT provides diverse training opportunities, including experience caring for rural, remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
He also travelled about 300 kilometres south of Darwin to Katherine, where he visited the local hospital and met GPs working in the area.
Dr Wright said properly supporting and funding GPs and registrars can help practices provide patients with a broader range of care.
