RACGP Hails Rural Workforce Incentive Reforms as ‘Significant Win’

12 Mar 2026

Previously, GPs’ eligibility was linked to work in metropolitan MM 1–2 areas, which excluded some doctors who were delivering substantial primary care and advanced skills in rural communities. The reforms remove these unintended barriers.

Under the changes:

  • Part-time work in MM 3–7 areas will now count towards program requirements

  • More GPs will be eligible for annual payments up to $21,000

  • The program better reflects the flexible reality of GPs working across multiple locations

Michael Clements said the update ensures the WIP rewards doctors who genuinely serve rural and remote communities.

“Many rural GPs work across multiple sites, including part-time in metropolitan areas. These changes recognise that flexibility and support the sustainability of rural services,” he said.

The WIP – Rural Advanced Skills program encourages investment in specialist qualifications and aims to attract and retain doctors in regional areas. RACGP advocacy played a key role in ensuring the reforms reflect the program’s original intent.

Associate Professor Clements added that the changes will improve the viability of rural general practice and the wellbeing of communities across Australia.
