RACGP Calls for More GP Training Clinics Across Australia

22 May 2026

The college already works with more than 3000 accredited training practices. It says becoming a training site can help clinics attract and keep doctors while supporting local healthcare services long term.

Expressions of interest are now open for practices in selected GP catchment areas across all states and territories, including all Monash Modified areas.

RACGP Acting National Director of Education and Training Operations, Dr Catherine Lees, said the college wants to grow the GP workforce without lowering training standards.

She said the RACGP is focused on creating strong training environments where future GPs can receive proper support and deliver safe, quality care to patients.

Dr Lees explained that some practices may need extra support before becoming accredited. This could include improving supervision, upgrading facilities, or using options such as remote supervision.

She also said accreditation is not automatically given to every clinic that applies.

According to Dr Lees, some practices may not yet meet the required standards because of supervision limits, infrastructure needs, or lower local workforce demand.

To apply, practices must already be accredited under the National General Practice Accreditation Scheme and provide full general practice services.

The RACGP says priority will go to clinics that show a strong commitment to teaching and can provide safe, high-quality training for GP registrars.
