RACGP Backs Digital IDs for GPs, With Strong Focus on Privacy and Patient Safety

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has outlined how digital identity technology, known as verifiable credentials (VCs), could improve efficiency across general practice while warning that strong safeguards are essential.
Verifiable credentials are secure digital versions of documents or professional credentials that can be independently verified. Examples include digital driver's licences, with similar technology being considered for other government-issued credentials.
In its submission to the Australian Government, the RACGP said VCs could simplify how GPs verify their identity, AHPRA registration, prescribing authority, and eligibility to access government services. Real-time verification could reduce administrative tasks and make access to platforms such as PRODA more efficient.
The College also said digital credentials could improve privacy by allowing people to confirm only the information needed for a service, such as Medicare eligibility or concession status, without sharing unnecessary personal details.
However, the RACGP stressed that patient safety, privacy, and data security must remain the highest priorities. It warned that failures in digital identity systems could affect healthcare delivery and highlighted the need for reliable systems that work across Australia's health sector.
The College also supports keeping digital credentials optional, with non-digital alternatives available for patients who cannot or choose not to use digital technology.
According to the RACGP, any future changes should align with existing patient identification standards and include consultation with healthcare professionals, along with appropriate training, transition support, and resources to help practices adopt new systems safely.
