Psychiatry Inpatient Telehealth Items Made Permanent on MBS
21 May 2026
From 1 November 2026, items 92478–92483 will continue permanently after a post-implementation review found they have improved access to care for patients in private hospitals.
These telehealth services were first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to support continuity of psychiatric care. The AMA says they have since proven effective in improving flexibility, access and timely treatment for patients.
The government has also eased restrictions on how often the services can be used, increasing the limit from one to two video consultations per seven-day period.
The decision follows a formal AMA submission to the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing in September 2025, which supported making the items permanent and relaxing existing limits.
Health leaders say the change will provide greater certainty for patients and clinicians and support ongoing continuity of psychiatric care in inpatient settings.
However, the AMA has noted that some requested changes were not included, including the option of telephone consultations when video is not available and the removal of the requirement for an in-person consultation within 48 hours of admission.
